IRS Tax Relief Timeline: How Long Each Resolution Option Takes

One of the most common questions we receive is: how long will this take? The answer varies significantly by resolution type. Understanding realistic timelines helps you plan finances, manage expectations, and choose the right strategy.

Installment Agreement: 1–4 Weeks

Streamlined installment agreements (under $50,000) can be approved online in minutes or by phone in one call. Non-Streamlined agreements requiring financial disclosure typically take 2–4 weeks. Once approved, levy protection begins immediately and the agreement is effective as of the approval date.

Offer in Compromise: 12–18 Months

An OIC application takes a minimum of 12 months from submission to acceptance (or rejection). The IRS reviews your financial disclosure, verifies assets and income, and negotiates terms. During OIC review, collection is suspended. If rejected, you have 30 days to appeal to the IRS Office of Appeals, which adds another 6–12 months.

CDP Hearing: 6–12 Months

After submitting Form 12153, the case is assigned to an Appeals Officer. Initial contact typically occurs within 30–60 days. Resolution — whether through a collection alternative or settlement — takes 6–12 months on average. Complex cases or those involving underlying liability disputes can take longer.

Penalty Abatement: Days to 6 Months

First-Time Abatement is granted immediately over the phone in most cases. Reasonable Cause abatement submitted in writing takes 2–6 months for the IRS to process. If denied, the appeal process adds another 3–6 months. Statutory exceptions may be processed faster with proper documentation.

Currently Not Collectible: 2–6 Weeks

After submitting a financial disclosure showing inability to pay, the IRS typically grants CNC status within 2–6 weeks of review. The IRS notifies you in writing. CNC is reviewed annually, so the status is not permanent.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I speed up an Offer in Compromise?

Somewhat. A complete, well-documented OIC application moves faster. The IRS has service level agreements for OIC processing. However, 12–18 months is realistic even with a perfect application.

How long does the IRS have to approve an installment agreement?

The IRS must respond to an installment agreement application within 30 days. For online applications, approval is often instant.

What happens while the IRS is processing my resolution request?

Collection is generally suspended while certain requests are pending — notably OICs and CDP hearings. For installment agreement applications, the IRS typically suspends enforcement during review.

Can I negotiate a faster OIC process?

If you can pay the OIC amount as a lump sum (within 5 months), the IRS processes these applications somewhat faster than periodic payment OICs.

How long does it take to get a federal tax lien released after paying?

The IRS is required to release a lien within 30 days of full payment. In practice, it often takes slightly longer. You can request an expedited lien release for a property closing.

Is there a way to resolve IRS debt faster than an OIC?

Yes — paying in full is immediate. An installment agreement is approved in days to weeks. If speed is critical and you have some ability to pay, an installment agreement with penalty abatement may achieve faster relief than waiting 12–18 months for an OIC decision.
